Fan’s Choice – Man of The Match V Fulham is…

16Aug10

The votes are in and the fans man of the match for the opening day is… Johan Elmander.

Once upon a time Johan Elmander was considered, by many fans, to be the £8 million weight around Bolton Wanderers’ neck that would eventually be to blame for dragging them down into the dark abyss that is the Championship. It seems that a decent performance in a goalless draw with Fulham is all it took for Bolton fans to forgive, if not yet forget.

Elmander carved out a couple of good chances for himself against Fulham at the Reebok and came off to a deserved standing ovation in the 90th minute. Only a string of decent saves by the stand in keeper kept Elmander off the score sheet in Bolton’s season opener. After a decent preseason, during which Elmander netted in impressive style three times, there are high hopes that the obviously talented player will start to show the form many have been waiting for.

Elmander’s display on Saturday makes him the fan’s choice for Man of  The Match after he “bagged” 45% of the votes. Knight and Holden took second and third place with 17% and 14% respectively, some way behind Elmander with nearly three times as many votes as second placed Knight.

If Elmander keeps up this sort of form and adds a few goals to his game he could be keeping fans favourite Ivan Klasnic on the bench for a while longer. Unless, of course, Owen Coyle opts to pair up Elmander and Klasnic in the front line with Kevin Davies dropping to the bench. One can only hope.
