Zenga to take the Reebok Helm?

"Come to me Bolton"

Bolton Wanderers are being linked with managers left right and centre at the moment following the departure of the unpopular Gary Megson.  One source though claims Bolton have made an approach to former Palermo manager Walter Zenga.

From the Bolton News,

A source close to the ex-Palermo is reported to have said: “Zenga has been approached by Bolton and knowing him well, he is very open to the idea.”

Back to me,

Bolton were linked with Zenga a few weeks ago and the former Italy Goalkeeper is dubbed “Mr Charisma” in Italy for his flamboyant style and unusual approach.  Certainly the mirror opposite of Megson and just what the doctor ordered for the Bolton fans (in one sense). But maybe it is a step too far and although he would bring a much-needed spark to the Reebok initially I’m not sure if he is the right man for the job in what can be a very harsh league.

Could you imagine Gary Megson writing a letter to the fans? Zenga did!
After a slump in form during the 1993-94 season, Zenga became the target of Inter Milan fans. He responded by writing them an open letter and getting then-wife and TV personality Roberta Termali to read it out on telly. It ran: “Men who have often saved you from great disappointment, men who have given and who still give their finest moments to this jersey, men who have always left the pitch with their heads held high, men who have rejoiced and suffered together with you, dear fans, and who do not deserve this nastiness…  you, dear fans, have insulted, attacked and denigrated them.”

Walter Zenga is renowned for his intricate free-kick routines, but none was more controversial than one deployed against Torino last November. As his Catania side  lined up to take a free-kick, three attackers standing behind the Rome club’s defensive wall dropped their shorts to distract Torino keeper Matteo Sereni, then ran onside as Giuseppe Mascara fired home.

Wild Walter might be described as the anti-Megson. It’s unlikely that dour Gary has ever staged team bonding sessions over pizza and wine. Or taken his players to a catwalk fashion show. Or allowed them to watch porn on the coach to away matches. According to the Italian media, Zenga did all three at Steua Bucharest.

Zenga was arrested during a drugs raid on Bucharest nightclub The Office in November 2002, with police claiming to have found wraps of cocaine near a table where he and his then-girlfriend were sitting. No charges against Zenga were filed and there is no suggestion that he was taking drugs. Former Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu, who was sitting beside him, said: “It was brilliant. I’d never seen the police do this before, and I felt like I was in the movies. Their faces were covered in black masks and they all had guns.”

All this could make Zenga the most entertaining Premiership manager ever seen!

When Walter was a player (goalkeeper) playing for New England Revolution in 1997, he celebrated a goal by running to the sidelines and snogging his girlfriend. They were still in a clinch when opponents Tampa Bay Mutiny took the kick-off and nearly scored from the centre circle.
